Panera Bread Franchise in St. Louis Gives Back Through Individual Charity

During Liberty On Tour's latest stop in St. Louis, they visited the St. Louis Bread Co., which is owned by Panera Bread Co. As detailed in the video below and a blog post by Pete on the main Liberty On Tour website, this restaurant works off of a "suggested donation" model of payment. So customers ordering food are given a suggested price, but it is up to them to decide what they can and are willing to pay.  In addition, they have an option to pay via "volunteer hours," whereby people can come in and volunteer to work in exchange for a voucher for free food and drinks.

The idea behind this is to ensure that people who can't afford to pay for a meal have options available to get food without having to spend money. And according to employees, this plan has been successful in accomplishing that goal. Reportedly, 85 to 90 percent of customers voluntarily pay at above the suggested price level. All profits raised above that which is required to fund the St. Louis Bread Co. itself, go toward feeding needy people and other area charities. In addition, company higher-ups have commented that they plan to open two other locations in other cities in the coming months.

Watch the video and you can't help but be impressed by what you see:

MARV Has Had a Few More Issues

Apparently,  the bad sensor issue, that cost Liberty On Tour valuable time and cash, was just a bit of foreshadowing of things to come. Recently, MARV has been experiencing a spate of mechanical problems as outlined by Pete on their latest blog post at the main Liberty On Tour site:

  • Last Thursday after shooting content for a couple of stories in St. Louis MARV died in an intersection. The next day we were back on the road with a new crank shaft sensor and $550 less in our budget. And at their request, we left the folks at Tom’s Truck Repair with some literature from LOT and our advertisers.
  • On Friday night, after a panel discussion at the Show-Me Institute and a meetup down the street, we drove 30min. and parked at Harrah’s Casino to put us closer to our next stop – Denver. But, when Adam attempted to exit MARV to play a few hands of poker while I slept we found that the door wouldn’t open. A metal piece inside the lock had sheered off. The next morning, after taking a cue from Dukes of Hazzard to enter/exit MARV, we picked up a new lock mechanism for $76 from an RV place just outside of Kansas City.
  • Last night, after joining a fruitful Liberty Restoration Project meeting and grabbing a bite with Brad Spangler, we hit the road – eager to put a dent in our 10hr drive. But that wasn’t in the cards. One of our rear tires blew out almost as soon as we left town. This morning we creeped a mile and a half to Dale’s Service in De Soto, KS, borrowed a 20-ton bottle jack and impact wrench and swapped out the then-mangled tire with the spare. Dale requested $3 – his cost to dispose of the tire. We offered him more (as it was a huge help) and he finally agreed to take enough to cover a meal. He agreed that government was too big and invasive.
  • As I write this MARV is at D & D Tire Inc. in Lawrence, KS getting two new tires (another of MARV’s rear tires, which we had gotten last year, isn’t in good shape and we have to replace the spare).  We decided it’d be a good investment to get new tires. And it’d provide us with a piece of mind and keep LOT on rolling. Per the prices we were quoted I’m guessing this will be about $450.

Those of here in Vegas are hoping that talk Adam and Pete had with MARV will keep and there will be no more unscheduled stops at repair shops. We'd also like to remind everyone that they can help offset these new, unexpected expenses by donating and/or purchasing an LOT t-shirt.

M.A.R.V's Breakdown

On 19 August 2010 in St Louis, The Team of Liberty On Tour Pete and Adam had the small misfortune of having their RV M.A.R.V (Mobile Authority Resistance Vehicle) brake down on their way to The Show-Me Institute where they were going to be on a panel about filming police.

Well it took them 19 hrs and 60% of their funds to get M.A.R.V up and moving again, but they did get him going, and will continue to tour the country documenting, teaching, and participating in Liberty activities.

Check out their Vid they made about the ordeal.

Unmasked Knowledge

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

ST. LOUIS, MO – I’ve heard Tom Palmer say that libertarians (to which I’d expand to anarchists/voluntaryists) have the right ideas but we just need to become better marketers of those ideas. A few months back I watched a YouTube video about time management. Obviously the subject interested me, otherwise I wouldn’t be watching it, but admittedly it was a bit dry. So what kept me watching for almost 10 minutes? The person communicating his tips wore different animal masks while speaking. So, just when I’d be about to click away I’d wait to see what his next mask would be. And I’d continue to listen and learn.

That video had hundreds of thousands of views.

With Liberty On Tour Adam and I are trying to be experimental. We know we’ll do some things that won’t have any traction. Perhaps this is one of them. But we figure it’s worth a try. Especially because we believe these ideas are worth sharing. If it makes the rounds to those not-yet exposed to the ideas of liberty it will have been well worth it. If it doesn’t, we’ll learn and move on. But at least we’ll have tried.

The first video features our bud Brett Perry, who, along with Adam and I, is active on CopBlock.org. And, like some other libertarian activists, he also has a column through the Indianapolis Libertarian Examiner.

In the second video I recite some of Robert Higgs‘ essay “The Siren Song of the State” posted over at Voluntaryist.com. I know some folks aren’t too fond of reading books or essays online but they may watch videos. Hopefully this is one way to share with them some good ideas.(read original post)

Philadelphia: The City That Bombed Itself

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

GREENFIELD, IN – Twenty-five years ago Frank Powell dropped a four-pound C4 bomb on a West Philadelphia row house, resulting in the deaths of five children and six adults associated with MOVE – a group that advocated for human and animal rights. Powell was never held accountable for his actions since he wore a piece of metal on his chest from the Philadelphia Police Department. His colleagues, who had fired 10,000 rounds into the dwelling, faced no repercussions. Nor did those who ordered the use of such aggressive violence or those from the same criminal organization that had seven years prior shot-up MOVE’s previous residence.

As the video below details, the history of the Philadelphia Police Department and MOVE underscores the harm that stems from granting others authority. If this concept is new to you and you advocate for peace and believe everyone is responsible for their actions – no matter their title or amount of metal on their uniform – I encourage you to read about private defense agencies.

Much love to our good bud George Donnelly for helping to share this story.

Below are pictures from the incident set to Leftover Crack’s “Operation M.O.V.E.”

For coverage and analysis of other related incidents, check out four videos we shot last year when on the road with Motorhome Diaries:
If you know of an incident that happened in one of the cities that we have yet to visit that if covered, will help to showcase the violence upon which the State rests, please let us know. (read original post)

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Last Saturday when on the Foundation for Economic Education property my bud Peter “Jaws” Jaworski – one smart, hardcore dude who’s the editor of the Western Standard (Canada’s online source for libertarian news and analysis) – took a few minutes to give an overview Marc Emery’s situation. Emery, an outspoken, entrepreneurial longtime pro-freedom activist, is being threatened with five years in a cage because he engaged in activities that some bureaucrats deem “illicit”.

Edgewater Police Officer Intimidates LOT’s Mueller for Filming

Unlike other ‘bucks we’ve worked from, the rush isn’t in the morning from commuters on their way to work but late at night when there are literally hundreds hanging out and riding around on their motorcycles and suped-up cars. DHS Protects NYC from Educational Material

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

NEW YORK, NY – On the first official day of Liberty On Tour Pete and I headed down to 500 Pearl St to meet up with Julian Heicklen, ‘Bile’ and Darren Wolfe for FIJA outreach.  As seen in the video above it was an eventful day and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did their job; protecting folks from gaining valuable knowledge.

It amazes me that handing out educational material can land you in a cage.  Is this not the year 2010?  Doesn’t everyone know that education is a great thing?  How do those employed by the DHS continue to arrest Julian for such an honorable act?  Do they not realize that they are going against just about every oath they swore to uphold?  I bet they would think differently if they ever found themselves infront of a jury.

I encourage anyone in the New York area or anywhere for to do some FIJA outreach.  Again, if handing out fliers that inform people of their rights, which wouldn’t be need if judges would do this in the court, then what will they come for next?  It only takes...(full post)

How To Interact With Cops

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

EDGEWATER, NJ – The day before we officially kicked-off Liberty On Tour we had a little run-in with the local “authorities”. It wasn’t anything too big – a property owner complained that MARV was parked in his parking lot – but we thought we’d share some video from the incident in the hope that it helps communicate some pointers on how to interact with the cops.

After my arraignment in Greenfield, MA on Monday Adam and I drove to Danbury, CT, to position us a bit closer to NYC – our first of 13 stops for LOT. Unfortunately the parking lot at the Starbucks – where we were working from – wasn’t too big so we parked across the street. KEENE, NH – I’m pleased to announce that our good friends at the Free Agents Network (FAN), “a network of individuals from across the globe united by a desire to promote liberty through activism, information technology, and voluntary cooperation” picked up a Mini Package and are now officially advertising through Liberty On Tour.
As is noted on their About page, “We have no central source of funding or organizational structure” so, as was done for Antiwar.com and the School Sucks Project, FAN’s advertisement was covered by those on the ground, including:

Much love to each of you that helped make this happen!

The decentralization that FAN advocates is in the organization’s DNA – it was itself created by individuals who each volunteered their time and skills when another, once-principled organization that many had been active with was co-opted by Statist sympathizers.

What Events Should We Hit Up?

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – I’m a big advocate of Austrian Economics so reminiscent of the great work done by Mises and Hayek on the economic calculation problem, which essentially said that a centralized bureaucracy can never have all the information needed to allocate scarce resources, Adam and I are hoping you can help us reach more minds while on the road with Liberty On Tour by giving us leads.

By sharing the dispersed knowledge you possess with us we can have a bigger impact and advance the voluntary society.

We’re just two individuals. You – much better than us – know what’s hot in your town. The issues we should cover, neighborhoods we should visit, folks we should connect with, big events, concerts or festivals that we should attend or park near to do outreach (compliments of MARV’s PA, the awesome materials our advertisers have sent us and the sweet lit that we’ll soon have posted, which too was crowdsourced).

For example, when in St. Louis we’re going to park outside a Rush concert where thousands of mostly liberty-oriented folks will gather. When driving from Phoenix to Austin we’ll stop in Tucson and park near some baseball fields where hundreds will be present for the weekly softball tournament.

To really advance these ideas of complete liberty we need to engage those not-yet-exposed. We want to be experimental so don’t be shy in your suggestions.

Please let us know what we should hit up via the contact form on our site.

Thanks in advance for your help! And if you want to join us at any of these events (we’ll add them to our calendar as we iron them out) we’d love to have you! (read original post)

KEENE, NH – Apologies to all y’all out in the San Fran Bay Area but after chewing on some options Adam and I decided to forgo our stop in your fair city. Our decision-making process went as follows:

  • The drive from Denver (the stop prior to San Fran) is about 20hrs
  • We were proactively approached by people in Salt Lake City and Reno – manageable 8hr drives – to have meetups
  • If we stop in Salt Lake and Reno we could head south on the 5 and spend a couple of days in Bakersfield, where some of the locals that have sworn to “serve and protect” haven’t exactly been doing that (here and here)

Pax Hammericana Publishing Joins Liberty On Tour

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

Keene, NH – With the deadline for advertising with Liberty On Tour quickly approaching, Pax Hammericana beat the clock joining a sweet cast of advertisers as our latest Mini Package.
Pax Hammericana is a new publishing company so I went to their about page and was pleased with what I read:
What is Pax Hammericana Publishing?

Pax Hammericana is a small but quickly growing publishing company intent on promoting eclectic writers and inspirational themes of freedom, justice and creativity through books, periodicals, merchandise and the whole menu of 21st century electronic gadgets. Our goal is to re-introduce forgotten writers, events, thoughts, and philosophies and to pay special attention to creative and innovative expressions today. Our focus is works that express the desire for human freedom. Our strategy is to be the very best at distributing interesting and educational products through multiple platforms.

What’s with the name?

“Pax” is the Latin word for “peace.” The phrase was used to describe the Pax Romana — the hundred years of peace — during the Roman Empire at the turn of the eras. The phrase has been used over the last few decades (often tongue-in-cheek) to describe the “Pax Americana” as the ideal and result of American power.

So the name really has nothing to do with any of that, except to express the hope for a more lasting empire — an empire of ideas built on the solid foundations of liberty, justice and wisdom.

What We Publish and Why

Pax Hammericana’s mission is to provide the finest in books, e-books, audiobooks and periodicals for intellectually curious individuals of all ages. We have a generally classical liberal orientation. We want to give you the chance to explore the prevailing ideas of our times in the areas which matter most — politics and religion, the forces which shape everyone’s lives.
One special mission close to our heart is to make uncollected, unpublished or out of print texts available in all the modern formats.

We also believe that great fiction is essential for the inquiring mind. For this reason...(full post)

Though still a relatively new, Shire Silver has already proliferated, as evident by its acceptance by the many vendors along Agorist Alley at the 2010 PorcFest. And personally, I’ve received and given Shire Silver a number of times for my own transactions since being here in the ‘shire.

KEENE, NH -  We’re pleased to announce that Liberty On The Rocks (LOTR) has joined the solid list of advertisers and we look forward to connecting with several of their local chapters while on Tour.  For those unfamiliar with Liberty on the Rock their goal is to encourage others to take notice and get involved.  Here’s their mission statement:
Liberty on the Rocks is a non-partisan, non-profit, social organization that seeks to unite individuals, regardless of political affiliation, who desire liberty. With the goal of facilitating networks, friendships and intelligent conversation, Liberty on the Rocks seeks to initiate the energy and dialogue necessary to move America from the grassroots up, toward the constitutional principles of freedom used to found this nation.
Pete and I have worked with Amanda Teresi, President/co-founder of LOTR, along with others in behind their success...(full post)

Liberty Maniacs On-Board LOT with Gold Package

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – Adam and I are pleased to announce that Liberty Maniacs has joined the principled group of organizations now on-board as advertisers. Not only do they have some of the coolest threads around, but they’re damn principled:
LibertyManiacs.com was founded in 2003 on the notion that people’s freedom—liberty—is, was, and always will be the driving force of progress, happiness, and well-being in the World. We believe like-minded people have always wanted to express their ideas, but there has been a lack of fun, cool products to do so.

If you’re reading this chances are you too believe that people should be free to act so long as they don’t initiate force on someone else. Why not help introduce that simple yet powerful idea to those you encounter by literally wearing your beliefs on your sleeve...(full post)

‘The Mini’ Package

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – Last month Pete and I announced our new project, Liberty On Tour, with the release of this video.  To cover the cost of this project we took on advertising from organizations/businesses involved in the liberty movement.  We’ve had a good response to the Gold/Black packages offered in the above video but wanted to give the ‘little guy’ a shot as well.

That’s why Liberty On Tour is announcing the “Mini” package, for $150 you get a 1′ by 1′ graphic on MARV to be displayed for the duration of the project, cost of graphic included.  Your business (organization, blog and/or more) will travel the 7,500 miles across the united states, as we hit 13 cities in 13 weeks, with Pete and I.  The graphic will be displayed on MARV, our RV, which is also where we take group pictures.  Meaning your graphic can and will be seen by a number of folks.

This package isn’t only for organizations, Liberty On Tour is encouraging anyone, bloggers, small businesses and more, to get on board with the Mini package...(full post)

The Future of Freedom Foundation Joins Liberty On Tour As Advertiser!

Originally posted by Pete Eyre at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – The Future of Freedom Foundation (FFF), which seeks to advance freedom by providing an “uncompromising moral and economic case for individual liberty, free markets, private property, and limited government” is the most-recent addition to the growing number of awesome organizations we’re happy to call advertisers of Liberty On Tour.

I’ve long been familiar of FFF and since learning of them years ago have actively shared their thought-provoking content with others. And, to be fully transparent, after getting off the road with The Motorhome Diaries I worked with FFF for a few months as an outreach consultant.

On a more personal level...(full post)

Liberty On Tour to Kick Off in Less Than a Month… Are You On Board?

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – The past few weeks Pete and I have been working non-stop on the behind-the-scenes aspects of Liberty On Tour (LOT) – hashing out LOT’s schedule, nailing down point-people and meetup locations, rebranding MARV and giving him some TLC to ensure he’s road-worthy, establishing our online presence and of course communicating with potential advertisers.  Needless to say we’re excited to hit the road!

We’ve had several great organizations commit to our advertising packages (video below) including; Center for a Stateless Society, Advocates for Self-Government, Students For Liberty, Antiwar.com, Freedom’s Phoenix, Foundation for Economic Education, FreeKeene.com and the Liberty Radio Network and have verbal agreements from many more. See our Advertisers page for more information on these orgs.

That’s why today we’re asking -  Are you on board?

There are 27 more days until we hit the road but we need to get advertisers nailed down by July 15th (we need time to get the graphics formatted, printed and adhered to MARV).  So watch the video below and contact us at libertyontour[at]gmail[dot]com if you or your organization/business/project is interested in teaming up with LOT.

If you do decide that LOT is a worthwhile investment for you...(full post)

Another Advertiser – Free Keene Hops on Board with Liberty On Tour

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

KEENE, NH – FreeKeene.com is a website run by several individuals who live in or near the Keene, NH area.  The purpose of this website is to highlight and document the evolution to a voluntary society.  From the about page at FreeKeene.com:
The next great step for mankind is the step toward the voluntary society. We are going to accomplish this using peaceful, market-based actions. This is not a revolution. We are not revolving, or going back to the beginning. This is evolution. We are on the leading edge of thought, creating new ideas and wealth that have never existed before. Free Keene allows you to tap into the epicenter of the Peaceful Evolution, from wherever you are, to see it all unfold. Better still, you are encouraged to educate yourself about liberty and the voluntary society via our free audio books and then encouraged to move to Keene, withdraw from the old coercive society, and join the voluntary society.
This website is a personal favorite of mine...

Freedom’s Phoenix Joins Liberty On Tour Advertisers!

Originally posted by Adam Mueller at the main Liberty On Tour website

MANCHESTER, NH – Pete and I are happy to announce Freedom’s Phoenix as the most recent advertiser with Liberty On Tour, joining an already impressive list.  We’re excited to have such a principled, active and devoted organization on board with us.  Per their about page:
We recognize that Freedom was taken from us the moment the ink was drying on the Constitution. Today’s governmental structure is imploding under its own weight, and its death rattles aren’t going to be pretty. At Freedom’s Phoenix we observe, comment and try to stay out of the way. We know Freedom will rise from the ashes, and we want to make sure that everyone’s Freedom is never signed away again by those who believe they have the power to do so.
That is something Liberty On Tour agrees with...(full post)
